1. Measurement of the London Penetration Depth in the Meissner State of NbSe2 using Low Energy Polarized 8Li (Master's Thesis)

M.D. Hossain

In this thesis, the Meissner state of NbSe2 was investigated using low energy beam of spin polarized 8Li. The 8Li nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T1 was measured as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The spin relaxation rate is sensitive to low frequency nuclear spin dynamics of the host Nb spins and is strongly field dependent. This is used to determine the reduction in the magnetic field upon cooling into the Meissner state. Using a calculated implantation profile and a model field distribution, one can extract a measure of the absolute value of the London penetration depth λ in Meissner state.  In addition, a model field distribution, assuming a suppression of order parameter near surface, was developed. In this case, we can extract another length scale which is related to the coherence length ξ. The value of ξ depends on the model field distribution but is significantly longer than that obtained previously in the vortex state using μSR. From the measured internal magnetic field distribution, London penetration λ is extracted as a function of temperature. There is also evidence of the coherence peak in 1/T1 of host nuclear spins. λ(T) follows the two-fluid model of superconductivity.Depending on the model for internal field distribution, λ(0) varies in the range (1795-2434)°A.

2.  Low-field Spin Relaxation 8Li In Superconducting NbSe2

M.D. Hossain et al

A low energy beam of spin polarized 8Li has been used to investigate nuclear spin relaxation in the multiband superconductor NbSe2. In low magnetic fields the 1/T1 spin relaxation rate of 8Li is dominated by low frequency fluctuations in the magnetic dipolar interaction with the host 93Nb nuclear spins. We show that 1/T1 is a sensitive monitor of the static local magnetic field B just below the surface. This is used to measure the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth λab and its temperature dependence in the Meissner state. The temperature dependence in 1/T1 and λab are consistent with a wide distribution of superconducting gaps.

3. β-Detected NMR of 8Li in the Normal State of  2H-NbSe2

D. Wang, M.D. Hossain et al

β-NMR of isolated 8Li has been investigated in the normal state of 2H-NbSe2.  In a high magnetic field of 3T  a single  resonance is observed with a  Gaussian line width of 3.5 kHz. The line shape varies  weakly as function of magnetic field and temperature but has a strong orientation dependence. The  nuclear electric  quadrupole splitting is unresolved implying that the electric field gradients are 10-100 times smaller than in other non-cubic crystals. The nuclear spin relaxation rate is also anomalously small but varies linearly with  temperature as expected for Korringa relaxation in a metal. These results suggest that Li adopts an interstitial position  between the weakly coupled  NbSe2 layers and away from the conduction band.

4. Proximal Magnetometry in Thin Films using β-NMR

M. Xu, M.D. Hossain et al

Low energy ion implantation of hyperpolarized radioactive magnetic resonance probes allows the NMR study of thin film heterostructures by enabling depth-resolved measurements on a nanometer lengthscale. By stopping the probe ions in a layer adjacent to a layer of interest, it is possible to study magnetic fields proximally. Here we show that, in the simplest case of a uniformly magnetized layer, this yields an unperturbed in situ frequency reference. We also discuss demagnetization contributions to measured shifts for this case. With a simple illustrative calculation, we show how a nonuniformly magnetized layer causes a strongly depth-dependent line broadening in an adjacent layer. We then give some experimental examples of resonance line broadening in heterostructures.

5.
The spin lattice relaxation of 8Li in simple metals

M.D. Hossain et al

We report the modification to the linear temperature dependence of the Korringa nuclear spin–lattice relaxation rate of an implanted NMR probe in silver, as it makes a thermally activated site change. We develop a simple model of this phenomenon, which is found in a number of metals including Au and Nb.

6. Direct measurement of the London penetration depth in YBa2Cu3O6.92
using low-energy μSR

R.F. Kiefl , M.D. Hossain et al

A direct measurement of the London penetration depth in the high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.92 has been made using low-energy μSR with an effective background suppression method. The average magnetic field versus mean depth was measured in the Meissner state of high-purity detwinned crystals of YBa2Cu3O6.92. The resulting magnetic field profiles along the a and b axes are consistent with a local London model beyond 10 nm but there are deviations close to the surface. The absolute values of λa and λb extrapolated to zero temperature are 126.1±1.2±3 and 105.5±1.0±3 nm, respectively. These results are compared with other less direct methods and extend the use of low-energy μSR to small crystals.
